Moving Survival Kit: Your Checklist Before Moving

Let’s face it, moving is difficult. You have collected stuff over the years and you have only a couple of weeks to pack and leave the house. There is a lot of good advice both in books and on the web: for example, Real Simple has a checklist that starts two months ahead of the move. Below is the 9-step program for a stress-free (or at least much less stressful) move. You can modify it to suit your situation:

  1. Get rid of anything you don’t want to move. First, your house will show much better with less clutter. Second, you won’t waste time, money and energy on moving things you don’t want/need.

  2. If you are moving to a new school district, contact your children’s school and ask them to transfer their records.

  3. If you need to change your physicians, ask for a copy of your medical records. You might even wish to get referrals for new physicians too.

  4. If you have pets and plan to move them with you, contact the vet and get their medical records. Also, make sure that your new place is pet-friendly.

  5. Get written bids from several movers. Don’t accept a bid on the phone; instead, insist that they should visit the house. Make sure they put USDOT number on the bid. The State of Texas requires that moving companies to register with FMCSA and have USDOT number. Choose one and make sure they are available around the time you are going to move.

  6. Put jewelry, valuable documents and the mover’s bid in a safe place. You don’t want to go looking for them at the last minute.

  7. Change your mailing address to the new house. You can do it online and save lots of time.

  8. Inform your financial institution (bank, credit card issuer…), employer, and utility companies of your move. If possible, move your utilities to the new place; otherwise, make sure that the utilities are connected in the new place. You can do this online and save yourself plenty of time.

  9. Don’t forget to take the valuables with you!
